Laws regarding firearms
#33824
Hello guys and girls. I am new to this forum but have a few questions regarding obtaining my permit. I will start off by saying I am 30 years old. I have been in some trouble when I was a kid but not since earlier in my 20's. I am older, have a family now and am a totally different person than I used to be. I recently bought an AR-15 lower receiver from Hoffmans for a custom build and passed the background check for that. I spoke with various people and they tell me that if I passed the background check for a long gun and can legally own one then I will be able to legally own a pistol. Can anyone else give me their input on this matter?

The second question/concern I have is the fact that unfortunately I live in Hartford right now. We can't really afford to move this year so I will be trying to obtain my permit here. I take the NRA class on 04/28 and will get the application when I complete it. I hear that it is for lack of a better word, a pain to get a permit in the city of Hartford. They ask for things that the state does not require like credit information, etc. I was told by someone to not give them this info and if they give me problems or deny me all together then file an appeal and it will be out of their hands and in the hands of the firearms examiners board and they should since I have passed a background check to own a long gun grant me a permit. I would love to hear what anyone thinks about this. I do not want to lose all the money this will cost for the application and background checks if they do not grant me a permit. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nick, welcome aboard!

Anyway, a little trouble in your past (depending on what it is) should not impede your progress here.

Unless you move into the state with your handguns, you will need a permit to own/buy/whatever with them.

Appealing to the BFPE has yielded some very, very good results. It's been said that they will rarely, if ever turn down a permit appeal.

Our resident experts will be on shortly. Just wanted to throw out the welcome mat. :)

Nick, we can assist you with your permit application in Hartford. I doubt you want to air your history here, so if you could send me an email (rich [at] ctcarry.com), I will discuss this with you and make sure there is nothing that is going to get in the way and how to handle disclosing (or not) these past issues.

We could use help with having someone go through the process in Hartford, especially with someone who is willing to listen to the advice we give and stand firm.

Either way, we will help you.
